Adhesive bonding: Joining of various materials

Modern bonding processes are characterized by a feature which distinguishes them from many other joining processes: It is possible to join almost all material groups and combinations and also a wide variety of component geometries. The surface-to-surface bonding of the components ensures uniform transmission of force between the joining partners. In addition, the adhesive layer performs other functions such as sealing or insulating.

Correct pre-treatment is essential

Pre-treatment of the surfaces plays an important role for a good and reliable bonding result. Cleanliness is not the only thing that matters. The surface structure of the materials also has a significant influence on the loading capacity of the bonding area. That is why we pay close attention to the condition of the adhesive surfaces when analysing your bonding task and develop measures for their safe and reliable pre-treatment.

Extensive equipment for testing

In most cases, it is not possible to check the quality of the adhesive joint without using destructive test methods. Extensive and reliable tests during the development of the joining process are therefore absolutely essential for adhesive bonding.

In the joining laboratory of our research partner ISF, we have access to a comprehensive range of equipment for testing of adhesively bonded joints. Thus, we ensure that, already in the stage of process development, the right steps for achieving strong and durable adhesively bonded joints are taken.

Process is firmly under control

The difficulties in the quality inspection of adhesively bonded joints put the focus on the bonding process and its control. This is why our approach is systematic, not only in process development. At the same time, we develop methods for process control. In doing so, we ensure the reproducibility of the adhesive bonding process in your production.

Hybrid Joining: Combining the strengths of different joining processes

Adhesive bonding processes have one major disadvantage compared to welding: the curing of the adhesive takes time. As a result, adhesive bonding processes are often more difficult to integrate into production processes in which components are immediately processed further.

In such situations we develop hybrid joining processes in cooperation with you. For example, just a few welding spots can ensure further processing, while the adhesive is curing in the subsequent production steps and achieves the strength required for the reliable functioning of the finished product.

Comprehensive consultation prior to implementation in your production

Adhesive bonding processes are complex joining procedures. That is why we are not content with just analysing and recommending measures, but support you until the adhesive bonding process in your production runs smoothly and reliably.

Record breaking adhesively bonded joints

Modern adhesively bonded  joints achieve remarkable strength values. The ISF demonstrated the forces which adhesive joints can transfer when the ISF pulled up 21 tons of steel on two adhesively bonded steel bolts, together with the Bundeswehr, and thereby clearly surpassed the previous world record of 16 tons.
